Women’s Rights

I was raised by a single mother who was the first in her family to graduate from college.  I know the importance of having strong, resilient women in our communities. My mother, and the thousands of other powerful women who have stood up for progress, have inspired me to fight for equality, justice, and values. My dedication to these values is absolute, and as Attorney General, I will fight to ensure that these values are protected for all women.

As your Attorney General, I will stand up to anyone who aims to infringe on our rights, and I am asking that you stand with me.

Combating Sexual Assault and Harassment:

I have devoted my career to fighting for women’s safety.  When I first started as a prosecutor, I was one of only two women in the Criminal Division. Over my career, I prosecuted hundreds of cases—including domestic violence, sexual assault and rape. This included the prosecution of Delaware’s only serial killer, who tortured and murdered five women. I have been proud to fight for the safety and justice of women. As Attorney General, I will continue this fight, because as the #MeToo movement has demonstrated, this fight is far from over. This year, brave women have stood up to speak out about their experiences with sexual harassment and sexual assault. As Attorney General, my office will take the lead to support and protect these heroic women.

As Attorney General, I will:

  • Refuse to turn a blind eye to sexual harassment; we need accountability and transparency to protect individuals from abuse
  • Ensure that my office is an ally to the brave individuals who stand up and speak out about abuses of power, hostile work environments, sexual assault and harassment.
  • Help employers create safe, effective sexual harassment policies and training programs.
  • Ensure that my office provides the resources and support so that women feel comfortable and safe to stand up and speak out.
  • Work with the Governor’s office to ensure that all State offices have effective policies, procedures, and trainings to deter sexual misconduct.

I have been disgusted by the many reports of sexual harassment and abuse of power that have surfaced this year. Speaking out against sexual assault and harassment takes immense courage. As Attorney General, I will be a strong ally to women so that no one has to navigate this process alone.

Equal Pay and Equal Rights in the Delaware Workforce:

In Delaware, on average, women are paid just 89 cents for every dollar paid to men. For women of color, these statistics are even more unjust. Black women are paid 70 cents and Latinas are paid just 59 cents on the dollar. On average, Delaware women lose over 2 billion dollars every year due to the wage gap. That is unacceptable and it is time we change.

As Attorney General, I will:

  • Be a leading voice for improved Equal Pay Laws to hold all parties accountable and ensure women are treated equally in the workforce.
  • Work to ensure that women have access to paid-family leave so no parent needs to choose between their child or their paycheck.
  • Advocate for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment to ensure women are guaranteed equal treatment in Delaware under our state’s constitution.

Protecting the Right to Choose and Access to Healthcare:

One reason I decided to run for office is because I am tired of having men use our bodies as a political bargaining chip. A woman's healthcare decisions should be between her and her doctor. At a time when so many of our fundamental rights are under attack by extreme politicians, we need strong women to stand up and protect our rights.

As Attorney General, I will:

  • Fight against any and all efforts to roll back a woman’s right to her reproductive freedom.
  • Join the coalition of Attorneys General who oppose the Trump Administration’s rollback of the ACA contraception requirement. This harmful policy will increase healthcare costs for women, restrict access to contraceptives, and lead to more unplanned pregnancies.
  • Fight for quality and affordable healthcare for women so they can receive access to contraception, reproductive health services, and cancer screenings.
